"One of the most common tactics used by scammers is solicitation, by phone and email." https://accrispin.blogspot.com/2020/02/the-impersonation-game.html
There are a LOT of scammers in publishing, and even more in the "book marketing" biz. Verify, verify, verify. Don't trust but verify--verify first, THEN trust but verify again.
And whatever you do, never ever forget Yog's Law. Money flows TOWARDS the writer, not away.
(Paying reputable professionals for verifiable services like editing, cover art, etc. is one thing. Paying a vanity press or a predatory agent is like setting your money on fire.)
(And please note that "predatory agent" does not mean "any literary agent", kthxbai.)
Anyway, just remember:
VERIFY FIRST. Then trust, BUT VERIFY AGAIN.
