Heroes are, more often than not, complete assholes.
I feel like this fact isn't highlighted enough in a lot of fiction.
@lilithsaintcrow
Agreed. The attitude required to step up, take charge, & save the day is admired in a crisis; in the office on a Monday, not so much.
@Farrell It's possible to step up and take charge without being a jackass, and possible to set those skills aside on Monday morning too. Our culture doesn't prioritize either skill-set. *sigh*
@lilithsaintcrow
Oh, a person can absolutely be both; I just meant that if fictional heroes behaved like heroes on *and* off the clock, many of them would come off as jerks.
"Stand aside, clearly I am the only person in the world that can handle this supervillain" is ok.
"Stand aside, clearly I am the only person in the world who can clear this paper jam" gets you left out of after-work cocktails.
@lilithsaintcrow
I do wish our culture would start rewarding people who manage to balance the two things, rather than letting jerks get a pass because they're good at something. (Lookin' at you, hotshot doctors.)
